Through William Chugg, Johanna's Youngest Child

William was the youngest of Johanna Stanbury and Philip Chugg. Married in Wales he and his wife began across the plains of the United States. This first wife, Mary Jeffries would perish during the trek and was buried near Chimney Rock in the Nebraska Territory. William had no children born in the United Kingdom. He married two  wives in Utah, each of his children being born in the Utah Territory, or in the case of his youngest Mabel Eliza in the state of Utah.

I have had the pleasure to correspond with descendants of William Chugg because of postings on the Johanna Chugg message board on www.ancestry.com, as well as a visit or two to and from some of these kin folk. My appreciation to their help in compiling (and correcting) my records. I have also learned I share other lineages with some of this line.

His children by wives Mary Mitchell and Eliza Barbara Fredrick, generation three, went on to parent a large posterity for William and hence, Johanna and Philip:

I have now put in what I feel confident is an accurate record of the third, fourth and fifth generations of Johanna Stanbury Chugg's family. Again. I chose this woman as she was the earliest generation in my pioneering Chugg family, I will continue to attempt to identify, learn about and keep a record of this family. The Families Through Ann Chugg Oliver

Ann's children, thus Johanna's grandchildren lived their lives primarily in Wales, and within the Cardiff area. I knew little of these families and thought I might not be up to the research in Wales and England. (Perhaps I was correct.)

But I have found great stores in the records available, much of it pre-WWII. I cannot forget how, after I had started the Chugg message board on Ancestry.com I was reminded that Johanna did indeed have families of her children who did not emmigrate during that Utah pioneering period. I have tried to remain mindful of that. Even so I have many empty lines in my  research.

Catherine Chugg Chappelle also had a daughter Elizabeth  Ann who married Thomas Madden. I find no further information on this family and do not know certainly if they immigrated to Utah or even to the USA.

When I began searching for that 'whole other' family in the Ogden city cemetery I also found there were colateral lines, especially from Catherine, John's sister. I would learn later that she had migrated to the Lehi area, adding to the richness of my heritage there (yes, I am one of those Kirkhams!)

The emmigration from Cardiff and Canton in Glamorgan, Wales, included the stonemason Arthur Bradder and his young family which included wife Mary Jane Chappelle, granddaughter of Johanna and who now is the subject of this post. The family traveled from Liverpool England aboard the ship Wisconcin, departing 19 Sep 1877 and arriving New York City on the 22nd. The number of LDS - Mormon immigrants listed is 482. Mary Jane and Arthur Bradder had two children with them on this journey: Alice Maude and Henrietta. Their first child, Evan John had died in Wales as a toddler of two. Bearing and rearing child in the 1800s was difficult, as it certainly remains today. Mortality in infancy and childhood was more common, if not frequent. Mary Jane would bear thirteen children, burrying nine as infants or in youth. The burried ones in Ogden are without markers, not uncommon when set against the hardships of pioneer life, and I have wondered if stones were for one's own children are too difficult for a stone cutter. Possibly, as well, is the cost of stones when one is struggling to develop one's business even as a stonecutter. I do not know the answers to these riddles I present myself, and really it does not matter as much as matters the fact I can and do go to that place of quiet repose and remember Mary Jane's babies.

Later, in Lehi Arthur did better in his vocation and we have stones of his work in public places as well as memorials in a cemetery.

Lines Through Esther, Phillip's Youngest Daughter

I have Esther passing away in 1946, possibley in Montpelier Idaho, where she was living at the time of the 1940 Census with her second husband William Nye. She had married a widower in James Samuel Lindsay with whom she had a daughter Irene Esther.

What I have seen and read of this part of Idaho aside from the absolutely beautiful vistas is the hard work of ranching and dry farming. But what good family and neighbors that makes!

I have found a record for Donna Irene Campbell, daughter of Max Brook Campbell born and died in Los Angeles area, 1958-1970. Her birth record states mother's maiden name as Shay. I find no further record for this family.

I also have a name of a husband of Irene Lindsay, Charles Lunsford, for which I find no other record.

Line Through Johanna's Grandson David Rinal Chugg

I shared e-mail correspondence with Karol Ransom, daughter of Virginia Mae Chugg, who told me that Rinal was pronounced as Reynald early on. I have always thought it would have been as Rhine-aul' which shows one of the drawbacks of doing family history in your room. I should get out and meet these people I research! A good idea, lets do it. Lets meet.

David Rinal and his wife Sarah Ann Jacobson had a large family. Of the thirteen born to them eleven married. I have not located families for all these marriages. The two who died young, Basil E Chugg (1890-1891) and George David (1895-1896) were both born in Nounan, Idaho and died there as well.

Generations 3, 4, & 5 Through Philip, Continued

There are some names that when I come across them I think, 'this must be the family I'm working on.' It used to be that Chugg was such a name, even Kirkham. Over the years this has changed. Several lines of Chuggs are found in Australia (including two of Johanna Stanbury Chugg's) and even in Utah there are at least two lines of Kirkhams with which I can find no connection. Phillip Chugg's daughter Elizabeth married Douglas Hix in 1882, and while they were divorced I do not recall that his second marriage increased the number of Hix families significantly (the ten children that Elizabeth bore with Douglas Hix is a sizable family by itself). I still find Hix families that do not seem to match any of the Hix families I am researching.

These are the next generations of Johanna's family, now down through her son Phillip and his wife Johannah Howell.

Philip had a large family, ten children with seven reaching adulthood. The last three were born in the United States, either in Cache Valley or Bear Lake County. Philip was hard working, whether as a laborer or farmer, but we know that automatically: could this pioneering citizen  have left the posterity he has if he were not.

A descendent, Karol Ransom contacted me about the spellings with one L or two in the name Phillip: simply to distinguish the father from the son. Alas I do not recall which, now, was to have one or two! But Karol, thank you for the contact and input.

Johanna's Family Through Elizabeth Chugg Harris

The Cardiff Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints record of members shows the emmigration of three young women I believe to be granddaughters of Johanna. One is Elizabeth Wale. Also in that record I find William Wale and Arthur Bradder departing as missionaries. How I would enjoy visiting with these- as well as many, many others of the Chugg Families in which we share this rich heritage.

The next generations descending from Elizabeth Chugg and William James Harris settled predominantly in the southern counties of Idaho. I have enjoyed trips to and through this country, the village of Inkom late on a summer day, autumn at Soda Springs still sparkle in my memory, as does the dusty ride to Nounan.

Thomas Harris (about 1851) and Mary Harris (about 1853) appear to have died young. I find no records referring to them in adulthood.

Lilly Adell Chugg, Generation 3, 4 & 5

I have always been touched by the appearnce of Lilly's memorial in the Ogden City Cemetery. It is a simple stone, stating only name and dates. This, in itself is not bad; but everybody's life has more than these- don't they?
Lilly married twice, divorcing from her first husband William Andrew Jones and marrying second Wade Hampton Joyce. They married in 1918 and their child Robert Carroll Joyce was born 31 May 1919. Alas, Lilly died June 1, 1919. Her death certificate lists smallpox as the primary cause of death.
Again I refer to my grandmother's stories. Her mother, Edna Chugg McCullough help care for the infant in the weeks after the birth and death of her cousin. I do not know for how long. Nearby Lilly's memorial is Wade's and his second wife. Her children have passed away now, Robert in 2008.
Lilly's life lasted roughly 30 years, how young that seems to many of us! Shall we believe she had the needs (as we all have) in life met? Happiness, love, peace of mind that her children would grow and prosper. And as I understand they did.

Here I leave my immediate Chugg kinships. I will have only one personal recollection of my Grandmother Backman's, a Chugg reunion in Providence where she stayed with Aunt Sadie (whom she described as an old, frail woman in what I guess roughly was 1912) but I begin to recount the family history of many lines I have come into contact with through my research. I hope I maintain an helpful and sensitive accounting of this family.

Victor Chugg, 3d Generation, His Children and Grandchildren

I gained much insight to Victor Chugg from a history assembled by Brian L Taylor of the Farr West Ward, LDS Church where the Chuggs are well known and highly regarded neighbors. Not until the Defense Depot, Ogden was established did Victor have steady employment away from agriculture. But he had worked steadily all his life and had a family of seven children whom he supported through various work and effort.
I met Rulon and his wife Doris while they were Family Histsory Missionaries at the Ogden Regional Center. I recall my timidity in approaching Rulon, though I got to know him better and appreciate the outstretched hand he offered to me, a stranger however closely we were related! I felt a loss as each of them passed away, though I had gotten to know others by then.

Hannah Chasey Chugg, Generations 3-4-5

Hannah, married to Edmund Richard Berrett in 1905 was born at Harrisville, Weber County, Utah January 28, 1881. They established a farmstead in North Ogden/Pleasantview near the northern boundry of Weber county. That area is grown in now, scarcely any farms are visible though I watch for a clue whenever I am in that neighborhood. My grandmother recalled going by wagon or cart to visit Aunt Hannah. Hannah'a first child, Bessie was born just one month before my grandmother. I know of no communication between them in their adult years, I do know grandmother kept track of obituaries of her kin "up there".

I never met Bishop Moroni Chugg, but as his daughters passed away (his sons having died before I moved to this area) I attended their funerals and met their children and grandchildren. Especially, I enjoy watching their efforts rewarded at the Weber County Fair and reading of their impact on their community in the Weber and Cache newspapers. Occasionally I have worked with one or another. They are not all of the "whole other family" but as I have typed in their names I realize the fortune that comes through Johanna Stanbury Chugg. Recently I attended a blessing service for one of the newest in her family and was reminded to count my own- blessings. KK

The last of the Third Generation Through John and Betsy

Sarah Chugg (1863-1932) born in Wales, married a well regarded pharmacist in Ogden, a widower with children though I am not certain if they were small or not. She and her husband Thomas Culley (1850-1924) did not have any children. Married in 1909, they are buried in the Ogden Cemetery.

David Chugg (1865-1887) was born in Wales, he wanted to work on the railroad even while his older brothers discouraged this. He died in Nevada when he was hit by a piece of equipment or other structure while he stood on the side of a moving train car. His remains were brought back to Ogden for burial, a thoughtful article appeared in the Ogden Standard, praising this highly regarded young man.

Generations 3-4-5 Through Joseph Chugg

Joseph Chugg Settled in the Harrisville and Farr West area of Weber county. My understanding is that his dairy farm was across the road from younger brother Moroni's. He had a realtively large family, nine children of whom all reached maturity. Joseph's family has epitomised the American family that we set as an example: Industrious, patriotic, hard working, faithful. You may note what I did not include. No, this was not a perfect family and you will not find me writing of any that are. I hold, still that this was a family we can ue as an example.
My grandmother remembered visits to uncle Joe's farm. Watermelon in the stream (or well- this is my memory failing now)Buggy rides to aunt Hannah's in North Ogden (or Pleasant View) and Great grandma Hannah Lee Chugg who lived with Moroni. My grandmother was born in 1906, so all but the last two of Joseph's children were older than she. And as Joe died in 1919, the visits had to have been when she was 12 or younger. But she remembered these things well into her nineties, making them -or her memory- remarkable.

Jane Chugg Frodsham

Jane was one of the daughters of John and Betsy that moved to Ogden after their father's marriage to Hannah Lee. She had daughters only but the name Frodsham jumps out at me from time to time. I have met through my work people who were neighbors, as children with Isreal and Jane either in town or up the Ogden Canyon. I know only one line that remained in this (Ogden) area: the Imus family.

Mary Elizabeth Chugg Pratt

As the communities in Utah grew, became more safe and self sufficient families were 'called' for settlements beyond the Great Basin. Johanna's children and grandchildren had an impact on this expanding of the intermountain region settlements. The hill and mountainous Nounan, Franklin, Incom in southern Idaho, and the Salmon and Snake River areas. You will find my geography faulty, I'm sure. Perhaps I will begin carrying an atlas with me! This family joined the community of Franklin- the earliest European settlemnt in Idaho.

The George Chugg Family

I know only data, it seems for George Chugg and his wife Mary Ann Thomas. They rest in the Ogden Cemetery but not very near John and Hannah Lee Chugg. Infants buried with them are John and Hannah's first children if I recall correctly ( I might have these infants confused with Moroni's first born and I will confirm one or the other for future articles.)
George and Mary Ann had twelve children, of whom only five married and four had families. George passed away nearly 73 years, Mary Ann eight years earlier at about age 60. George was a Railroad man as were some of his brothers, David the youngest being born in Wales died from an accident in RR work.

How To Proceed?

It becomes easy to lose track of the family lines if I introduce each generation separately. If I introduce each line as it comes up, for instance the line descending from John Chugg, will it be too long to get to the line from William?

My original research record was the long sheet and it went front-to-back from the parents through their family: Philip and Johanna, John, Eliza, Eliza Jane, Leander Neri, Eva May, etc with each individual numbered after the initials of the parents: John was PJ1, Betsy PJ1a, Eliza PJ1a1, Eliza Jane PJ1a11, Leander Neri PJ1a12, Eva May PJ1a121, which made some ease in locating a sheet in a book dedicated to that line. I do not think it would serve as well in this format. And I stopped numbering pages after I became dependent on electronic files!

John Chugg, married twice and having fourteen children, had ninety two grandchildren and two hundred seventy (or so) great grandchildren. Can you see the difficulty of using too many gadgets as the numbers, or keeping track of who was in the third or fourth generation and then if it should be the fourth generation beneath Johanna or John!

But I have these all in my PAF.5 file. I have been trying to identify and locate all the descendants of Johanna Stanbury Chugg. I continue to locate more when I do research, as I did last night with finding obituaries for Fern Borkman and Bill Fackenthall.

How shall I proceed? I am going to look at others' work and ask questions and give it thought. I want to relate the story of this family as fully as I am able and in a way that you can read and comprehend as well as use for your own research. Please return. Soon, I hope.

Johanna's Last Child, William's Children

William had children by his second and third wives, the first Mary Jeffries having died along the immigrant trail with out children. The children of Mary Mitchell, all born Providence, Cache, Utah:
Sylvia May Chugg, 1864-1934, married Alfred Brigham Crabtree of Providence. Their children were Alfred Brigham, Jr, 1885 - 1932, father of 6 with wife Enid Matthews.Russell William, 1887 - 1964, married first Bessie Poulsen, second marriage to Hazel Finch he was father to six children. Roland Myrle, 1890-1962, husband to Rachel Alder and father to six sons.Mable Rose, b/d 1896.Charles Milford,1902 - 1987, married to Norma Smith Campbell in 1926, having two children.
William John Chugg 1866 - 1939, married Bertha Zollinger of Providence. Parents of ten children: William Duard Chugg,1889-1941, married to Lillie Frederick and father of thirteen; Retta Irene C Matthews,1892-1994, wife of Newel Morris Matthews and mother of six; Gladys May C Hansen Smith,1895-1985, mother of ten children; Pearl Mitchell C Pickett,1897-1973, wife of Wade H and mother of four; Venna Bertha C Hammond Campbell,1900-1977, mother of three; LeRoy Edward Chugg, 1902-1987, married Laura Christensen and father of five; Melvin Zollinger Chugg,1904-1948, father of of four; Marion Byron Chugg,1907 - 1982,father of three; Erma Louise C Davis Smith,1909-1995, mother of one son; Mary Lenore Chugg, 1914-1915.

Third Generation, Ann Chugg Oliver Family

I have a record that shows nine grandchildren for Johanna by her daughter Ann. Ann married John Oliver in Cardiff in 1857. Her first two chidren died at birth or in infancy, three others I can locate no information other than birth dates. All were born St John Baptist Parrish, Cardiff, Wales.

Amelia Oliver, born 1867, married 1886 to William James Lindsay, being parents to eleven children: Walter John, Beatrice, Ethel Maud, William Oliver, Gladys Emma, Albert Stanley, James Alfred, Oliver George, Edward Oliver, George Leslie, and Arthur Niman.
Eliza Ann Oliver, born 1869
Thomas Henry Oliver,born 1871 and with wife Margaret having two daughters: Florence and Gwendoline.

Grandchildren Through Mary and Catherine

Mary Chugg married George Lane in 1850, I have a record of one child, Thomas Lane for whom I have not gained further information. Writing this story has provided some encouragement to research the Lane family again, which I have foregone as I focused on the American pioneer families. A note on the Message Board at www.ancestry.com some years ago reminded me that there are kin yet in England and Wales.

Through Catherine there are these grandchildren. I have found variant spellings, selecting this spelling here and throughout my personal records:
John Chappelle, 1853 to 1872 and Thomas Chappelle, b. 1854
Mary Jane Chappelle Bradder, 1856 to 1924 born Cardiff and passed in Lehi, Utah. Arthur Bradder was a stonemason, carving headstones and in Lehi an obolisk that stands outside the Lehi historical center. Of thirteen children I have for this couple there are several buried in the Ogden City Cemetery that have no marker, I attribute this to the hardships of pioneering, there could be no stone "extra" that they could have used. I cannot confirm this, perhaps I am off the mark. Four daughters lived to have families of their own: Alice B de St Jeor, Henrietta B Gill, Jane B de St Jeor and Mabel B de St Jeor. The de St Jeor husbands were two brothers and a cousin. All these families settled in Lehi or other Utah County locations.
Elizabeth Ann Chappelle Madden, b. 1858, no further record. in my files and one unnamed daughter b/d 1860.
William Chappelle 1862 to 1922, born Cardiff and living his life out in Ogden, Utah. He married Fidelia Lowe in 1881 and they were parents to six sons, William Andrew, John Arthur, Thomas Alonzo, Walter Webb, Clarence August and Henry Rodger; all living to adulthood. Fidelia passed away 1938, and rests beside her husband in the Ogden City Cem.

Third Generation through Philip Chugg and Johanna Howell

Nounan, a community in the present Bear Lake County of Idaho had a very small civic center, if ever it did at all. Two cemeteries were recorded, the Chugg Cemetery and the Skinner Cemetery. To find the Chugg Cemetery I had to climb through a gate and walk through a field planted and irrigated for alfalfa. The memorial stones were in an area unplanted but overgrown. The stones did not appear to represent burial sites any longer, though I am not certain. I did not stop at the Skinner Cemetery, which from the road appeared maintained. I do not recall the year I made that trip. It was at least 20 years ago, being part of a circuit trip to locate Idaho Chugg locations.Philip Chugg and his family settled in that area and were closely aligned with the Skinner family.

John Chugg, born 1852, and died 1859, both in Cardiff, Wales.
Mary Jane Chugg, 1854 to 1937, born Cardiff and married probably in Logan to Hyrum Skinner, b. 1850 in England. Parents of three daughters, Leah S Hughart, Sarah and Estella Skinner. The last born in Nounan.
Phillip Chugg, 1857 to 1860, born and died Cardiff.
Philip Chugg, born 1860, married in Utah or Idaho to Ellen Williams, 1864 to 1922, parents to Austin P Chugg, Leslie P Chugg and Mary Ann C Haight.
Sarah Ann Chugg 1862-1941, wife of Frederich Stauffer of Switzerland and settler in Cache County, they were parents of Andrew, Inez Sarah S Bailey, Rhada S Shaw, Frederick Matthew, Melba S Ellis and an unnamed daughter all born in Montpelier, Idaho.
a daughter Elizabeth was born and died 1865 in Cardiff.
Elizabeth Chugg, 1866 to 1953, married Douglas Hix in 1882. Their children were Earl Constantine, Wayne Townley, Hazel Irene, June Pauline, Gladys Lucile, Marguerite, Eva Francine, Douglas, Ruth Elizabeth and Mary Hix. Mr Hix passed away in Salt Lake City in 1938, Elizabeth died in St Anthony, Idaho.
David Rinal Chugg was the first born in the United States in this family, being born at Providence May 1870. He married Sarah Ann Jacobson, 1872-1955, in 1889. Their children were all born in Nounan: Rinal David,Basil E, George David, Lyman Drew, June V, Claude Martin, Doris May C Leisen, Peter Jefferson, Cora Mae C Jefferis, Frederick Elzo, Nounan Ivan, Ira Anton, and Gladys Nicolena C Hindmarsh. David, as did Sarah died in Alameda, California in 1953.
The last child of Philip was Esther Chugg Lindsay, 1877 to 1946. She had one child Esther Irene Lindsay Lunsford.
