3rd Generation, Children of Elizabeth Chugg & William James Harris

The first two children I have on record in this family are Thomas Harris born about 1851 and Mary Ann Harris, born about 1853, both in Cardiff, Glamorgan, South of Wales. I do not have my sources in immediate reach. I have no further information on these two.
Elizabeth Harris, 1858 to 1930, born in Cardiff and passing away in Pocatello, Bannock, Idaho, married Thomas William Hargraves in 1878. She also married William James Wales (or Wale), which dates I have do not match the births of her children. I located my information through microfilmed records LDS Archives and also through internet corespondance with Kate Welton Kuzmich, a descendent of Ada May Wale, a daugher of Elizabeth and William.
Sarah Jane Harris, 1860 to 1891, wife of Samuel Gates Marler, also born Cardiff and passing away in Idaho. She is buried in Lewisville, Jefferson, Idaho. Mr. Marler, 1859-1932,died in Rigby, Idaho.
Eliza Harris born Cardiff 1865, married William J Chugg (1850 to 1908) and in 1915 married John H Schmidt. Eliza passed away 1946. She had nine children with William Chugg, these being William J, Elizabeth Ann C Buckley, Estella Myrtle C Ross, Ethel Mae C Skinner, Martha Rebecca C Strutt, Argenta Eliza C Skinner Ellis, Harris Phillip Chugg, Wayne Tonley Chugg, and Vern Albert Chugg; I have no record of children in second marriage.
William James Harris born 1867 in Cardiff and passing away 1948, location unknown, but I believe in Idaho. Married Clara Emma Guior 1892, with two children William B and Clare H Anderson.

Generation Three, Children of Elizabeth Chugg Harris

Thomas Harris, born about 1851 and Mary Ann Harris, born about 1853 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales I can find no other information for.
Elizabeth Harris, also born in Cardiff in 1858 passed away in Pocatello, Bannock County, Idaho, on 15 May 1930. Age 72. She had married Thomas William Hargraves, 1858 - 1944 who was born in Salt Lake City so that we can suggest the marriage was in the United States after her immigration. I cannot determine if there was a divorce, but I have another marriage listed to William James Wales, with a child of that union, Ada May Wales, born 2 May 1878. The first Hargraves child, Samuel was born 1879 in Albion, Cassia County, Idaho, followed by Delilah, Britt Melvin, Ethel Frances, and Ganet.

Catherine Chugg Chappelle and William Chugg

Catherine Chugg was daughter number three. Born in West Downe 3 Oct 1828 she married there 22 Apr 1849. Her husband, John Chappelle was born 1829 in Berrynarbor. I do not have his death date. Catherine died in Lehi, Utah County, Utah. My understanding is that her daughter Mary Jane Bradder had immigrated earlier and then Catherine, with younger child, William joined her in Ogden.

Her children were John Chappelle (1853 - 1872), Thomas Chappelle (1854-), Mary Jane C. Bradder (1856 - 1924), Elizabeth C. Madden (1858-), a daughter born and died 1860 and William Chappelle (1862 - 1922). All were born in Cardiff, and I do know of Catherine, Mary Jane and William having come to Utah. Mary Jane is buried in Lehi, while William is buried in Ogden.

William Chugg, the youngest of Philip anad Johanna was born 25 November 1837 in West Downe. He married Mary Jeffries in Cardiff in 1856. I have no record of children for them; Mary died on the Pioneer trail near Chimney Rock, Nebraska Territory. On 12 Dec 1863 William married Mary Mitchell in Salt Lake City. They would practice the principle of plural marriage when William married Eliza Barbara Frederick 3 June 1880. Their deaths would occur: William, 17 Aug 1924; Mary, 16 May 1893; Eliza, 30 May 1936. All are buried in the Providence City Cemetery.

Children of William and Mary were Sylvia C. Crabtree, William John Chugg, Mary Ann Chugg, Jane Chugg, Elizabeth Chugg, Parley Edward Chugg.

Children of William and Eliza were William Hyrum Chugg, Alvin Frederick Chugg, Ezra Albert Chugg, Nora Elizabeth C. Bisseger, Nathaniel Benjamin Chugg and Mabel Eliza C. Busby.

Elizabeth Chugg Harris and Philip Chugg the younger

Elizabeth Chugg was the first daughter of Johanna and Philip. Born February 1822 (christened 17 Feb)in West Downe, she married in Cardiff, Wales in 1850 William James Harris. Her death I have as 29 Oct 1889 and William Harris' 1908. I do not have a record of place of these deaths. William Harris was born 1824.
Their children all born in Cardiff, were Thomas Harris, Mary Ann Harris, Elizabeth H. Hargraves, Sarah Jane H. Marler, Eliza H. Chugg, and William James Harris.

Philip Chugg, the second son was born 14 Jan 1822 in West Downe. He married in Cardiff also, on May 3, 1849. His bride was Johanna Howell, born 1 November 1829 in Rumy, Monmouth, England. They raised their family and both died in Nounan, Bear Lake, Idaho; Philip 3 Dec 1887 and Johannah 1 Jun 1916.

The children of Philip and Johannah Howell Chugg, the first several born in Cardiff, were William J Chugg, John Chugg, Mary Jane C. Skinner, Philip Chugg- infant, Philip Chugg (III), Sarah Ann C. Stauffer, Elizabeth C. Hix, David Rinal Chugg, and Esther C. Lindsay. A daughter named Elizabeth was born and died in infancy in Cardiff. Rinal was born in Providence, Utah and Esther in Nounan.

John Chugg

Number One Son, John was born 19 Mar 1819 in West Downe, Devonshire, England. He married in Ilfracombe 4 Sep 1844 Elizabeth- Betsy- Lovering who was born 21 Apr 1821 in Colbridge, Devonshire. She was daughter to George and Jane Butler Lovering.

Between 1844 and 1865 they would have eight children. Everyone would live to adulthood and see Utah. Betsy, alas would be here only a short time before succumbing to obstructed bowel 19 Aug 1872.

With a family still fairly young, John wed a second time 19 October 1874, marrying Hannah Lee, an immigrant from East Mersea, Essex, England, the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Chasey Lee. This family would include 7 children born between 1875 and 1888. John and Hannah built a farmstead in Weber County and when they died, 1903 and 1924 respectively, they would be burried in the Ogden City cemetery.

The children of John and Betsy were Eliza C. Butler, George William Chugg, John Henry Chugg, Mary Elizabeth C. Pratt, Jane C. Frodsham, Joseph Chugg, Sarah C. Culley, and David Chugg.

The Children of John and Hannah were John Samuel Chugg, William Cornelius Chugg, Moroni Chugg, Hannah Chasey C. Berrett, Zina May C. Orton, Victor Chugg, and Lilly Adell C. Jones Joyce.

Leila Chugg Heslop, writing a history of the Harrisville or Farr West, Utah Ward provided me with much of my early information. A recent book, Ogden Pioneer Forts lists John Chugg as an early resident of Bingham Fort. This book was compiled by Joyce B. Maw.

And so, the questions

My Chugg PAF- Personal Ancesteral File- begins with my third great grandfather John Chugg. As this is a story of a family coming from his mother, Johanna Stanbury Chugg, I will go back one generation and then follw the descendancy chart from there. Johanna came to Utah from Wales.

The Chugg family had moved to the Cardiff area in Glamorgan for work. Much of the work they found was in coal mining and railroads. I imagine someone standing on the windy north coast of Devonshire wondering if there would be work up there, beyond the treacherous sea in Wales. Had the farming in the Downes ceased to feed the large family? Were they in the younger branch and so in need of income or autonomy? As families will sometimes experience, had there been a falling out? Was this the adventure long dreamed but now a possiblity that could not be missed.

Chuggs had been in West Downe, East Downe, Mortehoe, Sherwill, Berrynarbor, Combe Martin, and Ilfracombe in Devonshire for many generations. As had been Stanberrys (Stanbury).

Philip Chugg married Johanna in December of 1818. Of their childhoods and early lives together I have only learned little. In fact what I know hardly bears my telling. I learned the most from Leila Chugg Heslop in her history of the Farr West/ Harrisville ward history that was produced in the 1980's.

I believe it was in Cardiff or in Canton, Wales that the family first heard the preachings of LDS Missionaries. The Mormons. Could it have been that they had taken the lessons the missionaries provided while still in England, and had been ostricized? Whatever the chain of events the Philip Chugg and family moved to Wales. Some daughters, already married remained in England, And sons, my great great great grandfather among them, also married went with.

Philip Chugg would remain in Canton, Glamorgan, Wales, his death coming in 1866. I also have a death date of 1859; either date would have Johanna coming to America- to Utah as a widow. She would die in Cache County eleven years later, 1879 and be buried in the Providence City Cemetery.

I have related the approximate dates of the staggered immigration. Where possible I will be specific as I relate the story of each family of Johanna's children.

Coming To America

William Chugg came to America in 1862 with his first wife Mary Jeffries. In their party was his niece Eliza, John's eldest child. Mary Jeffries perished on the journey across the Ameican plains. Saddly, this was to be the case of many immigrants; we will be grateful for those that made it here to become our great-grandparents and remember fondly those that we lost along the trails.
William went on to marry Mary Mitchell in 1863 at the Endowment House in Great Salt Lake City. Later, in 1880 at Logan he married Eliza Barbara Frederick.

Eliza Chugg would marry before her father, mother and siblings would arrive in Utah. She married Leander Butler in 1864.

Philip Chugg immigrated in 1868, his party including his wife Johannah Howell, his mother Johanna Stanbury Chugg and his nephew John Henry and niece Mary, children of John.

John Chugg immigrated 1869, bringing his sons George and Joseph; they would work to provide the passage for his wife Betsy Lovering and their three youngest children who came in 1870.

Catherine Chugg Chappelle came to Utah as a widow in 1878, joining her daughter and son-in-law in Ogden, Utah.

Elizabeth Chugg Harris immigrated to Idaho, I do not have dates for this.

John remained in Utah, passing his life in Weber County where he and second wife Hanna Lee raised their family. Philip would settle in the Bear Lake region of Idaho and William the Cache county area of Providence. Catherine moved to Lehi where her days passed and she is buried.

Husband and father Philip Chugg died in Wales in 1866, according to record obtained by Kate Welton Kuzmich, from the family of Elizabeth. Daughter Mary Chugg Lane married and passed in Wales, where we also find death dates for Jane Chugg and Ann Chugg Oliver.

A FAMILY RECORD, 1862 T0 2011

I want to know that I have done something, in my slice of the times of this family story, that is meaningful and enjoyable to my kinfolk. I hope that this manner of relating the story fulfills that desire.

I began with questions: Which date? Which person? What order? Format? Let me tell you first why I am doing this blog, and then what I decided on those questions.

I moved (back) to Utah in December 1985. An early job was in Ogden near Lorin Farr Park. I had made a habit of walking into town through the Ogden City Cemetery. A peaceful place, very interesting to my curiosity for history and biography. One day I noticed a marker for one John Chugg. I must have already begun family history research for the name to register, but I did not know the other names on the nearby memorials.

When I was in Salt Lake City the next opportuniy I asked my grandmother Backman if she knew of or knew why John Chugg would be buried in Ogden. He had a 'whole other family up there' she told me.I began to look for and to research that whole other family: his second wife Hanna Lee and their children and his siblings and his mother.

I have been doing similar projects with all my pioneering ancestors. I wanted to know who they were, what they did. I wanted to see if I could find their mark on the world I live in today. And I have.

Johanna Stanbury Chugg was not the first of the Chugg family to immigrate to America. In fact she came rather later- by about six years. But she was the eldest of the immigrant Chuggs, the matriarch of our family. Philip, her husband did not immigrate I understand and so I think of her as the head of this American Chugg family.

I have been reminded that not all her children came to America. I have had notes from descendants of those remaining in England and Wales. As I learn more I will bring them to this page, but I will write for the most part of the American family: the family as it comes down through John (1819-1903), Elizabeth (1822-1889), Philip (1822-1887), Catherine(1828-1916) and William (1837-1924).

The others, Mary (b. 1826), William (infant), Jane (1833-1857) and Ann (1833-1910) I do not know quite as deeply.

We, Johanna Stanbury Chugg's progeny have spread out across the country and into other countries as well. We have estabished and sustained industries, ventures, services that have made life better for ourselves, our neighbors and the world. We have served our country, some giving all. We have taught, fed and cared for our fellows; we have led them in faith and in government. We have served them in public law and safty. We have soothed them at birth and their families at funerals.

We, of Johanna's family are a remarkable people.
