Johanna's Family Through Elizabeth Chugg Harris

The Cardiff Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints record of members shows the emmigration of three young women I believe to be granddaughters of Johanna. One is Elizabeth Wale. Also in that record I find William Wale and Arthur Bradder departing as missionaries. How I would enjoy visiting with these- as well as many, many others of the Chugg Families in which we share this rich heritage.

The next generations descending from Elizabeth Chugg and William James Harris settled predominantly in the southern counties of Idaho. I have enjoyed trips to and through this country, the village of Inkom late on a summer day, autumn at Soda Springs still sparkle in my memory, as does the dusty ride to Nounan.

Thomas Harris (about 1851) and Mary Harris (about 1853) appear to have died young. I find no records referring to them in adulthood.

Lilly Adell Chugg, Generation 3, 4 & 5

I have always been touched by the appearnce of Lilly's memorial in the Ogden City Cemetery. It is a simple stone, stating only name and dates. This, in itself is not bad; but everybody's life has more than these- don't they?
Lilly married twice, divorcing from her first husband William Andrew Jones and marrying second Wade Hampton Joyce. They married in 1918 and their child Robert Carroll Joyce was born 31 May 1919. Alas, Lilly died June 1, 1919. Her death certificate lists smallpox as the primary cause of death.
Again I refer to my grandmother's stories. Her mother, Edna Chugg McCullough help care for the infant in the weeks after the birth and death of her cousin. I do not know for how long. Nearby Lilly's memorial is Wade's and his second wife. Her children have passed away now, Robert in 2008.
Lilly's life lasted roughly 30 years, how young that seems to many of us! Shall we believe she had the needs (as we all have) in life met? Happiness, love, peace of mind that her children would grow and prosper. And as I understand they did.

Here I leave my immediate Chugg kinships. I will have only one personal recollection of my Grandmother Backman's, a Chugg reunion in Providence where she stayed with Aunt Sadie (whom she described as an old, frail woman in what I guess roughly was 1912) but I begin to recount the family history of many lines I have come into contact with through my research. I hope I maintain an helpful and sensitive accounting of this family.

Victor Chugg, 3d Generation, His Children and Grandchildren

I gained much insight to Victor Chugg from a history assembled by Brian L Taylor of the Farr West Ward, LDS Church where the Chuggs are well known and highly regarded neighbors. Not until the Defense Depot, Ogden was established did Victor have steady employment away from agriculture. But he had worked steadily all his life and had a family of seven children whom he supported through various work and effort.
I met Rulon and his wife Doris while they were Family Histsory Missionaries at the Ogden Regional Center. I recall my timidity in approaching Rulon, though I got to know him better and appreciate the outstretched hand he offered to me, a stranger however closely we were related! I felt a loss as each of them passed away, though I had gotten to know others by then.

Hannah Chasey Chugg, Generations 3-4-5

Hannah, married to Edmund Richard Berrett in 1905 was born at Harrisville, Weber County, Utah January 28, 1881. They established a farmstead in North Ogden/Pleasantview near the northern boundry of Weber county. That area is grown in now, scarcely any farms are visible though I watch for a clue whenever I am in that neighborhood. My grandmother recalled going by wagon or cart to visit Aunt Hannah. Hannah'a first child, Bessie was born just one month before my grandmother. I know of no communication between them in their adult years, I do know grandmother kept track of obituaries of her kin "up there".
