John Chugg

Number One Son, John was born 19 Mar 1819 in West Downe, Devonshire, England. He married in Ilfracombe 4 Sep 1844 Elizabeth- Betsy- Lovering who was born 21 Apr 1821 in Colbridge, Devonshire. She was daughter to George and Jane Butler Lovering.

Between 1844 and 1865 they would have eight children. Everyone would live to adulthood and see Utah. Betsy, alas would be here only a short time before succumbing to obstructed bowel 19 Aug 1872.

With a family still fairly young, John wed a second time 19 October 1874, marrying Hannah Lee, an immigrant from East Mersea, Essex, England, the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Chasey Lee. This family would include 7 children born between 1875 and 1888. John and Hannah built a farmstead in Weber County and when they died, 1903 and 1924 respectively, they would be burried in the Ogden City cemetery.

The children of John and Betsy were Eliza C. Butler, George William Chugg, John Henry Chugg, Mary Elizabeth C. Pratt, Jane C. Frodsham, Joseph Chugg, Sarah C. Culley, and David Chugg.

The Children of John and Hannah were John Samuel Chugg, William Cornelius Chugg, Moroni Chugg, Hannah Chasey C. Berrett, Zina May C. Orton, Victor Chugg, and Lilly Adell C. Jones Joyce.

Leila Chugg Heslop, writing a history of the Harrisville or Farr West, Utah Ward provided me with much of my early information. A recent book, Ogden Pioneer Forts lists John Chugg as an early resident of Bingham Fort. This book was compiled by Joyce B. Maw.
